Overview

"For us, it's contradictory to sing in the language of the oppressor, the murderer of our culture. How could I speak of Quetzalcoatl in the language of Cortés?" From the Lima Metal Festival in Peru to Guadalajara in Mexico, thousands of metal bands reclaim their traditions and culture through their music. This is pre-Hisphanic metal, a subgenre dedicated to pre-Columbian civilizations and, of course, specific to Latin America. A Dose 2 Metal goes to meet these bands that fuse metal and traditional pre-Columbian instruments to sing of their rejection of Hernán Cortés and the Spanish invaders, their love of nature, their defense of indigenous peoples, and the glory of the Aztec and Inca gods.
