Overview

At the borders of Norway, Finland and Russia, the small town of Kirkenes plays a key geopolitical role. A battalion of some 700 soldiers is stationed in this northern Norwegian town of 3,500 people. Oslo asserts its territory in Russia’s shadow and is an important outpost for NATO and the EU.
