Overview

Distributed by the Central Section of National Film and Newsreels of the Ministry of Government and Police, the short film "Earthquake" documents the extent of the destruction and the work of institutions on behalf of the communities affected by the 7.7 Mw moment magnitude earthquake that struck the Peruvian highlands and central jungle in 1947, claiming 2,233 lives. The Minister of Agriculture, Engineer Pedro Manuel Venturo Zapata, visited the area to direct the relief operations, carried out alongside volunteers from the Peruvian Red Cross. Reconstruction would not begin until 1951 with the rehabilitation of the Lima-Concepción-Satipo-Río Negro highway.
