Overview
Marion Crane steals $40,000 and drives toward Fairvale to be with her boyfriend, Sam. After switching cars and getting caught in a storm, she stops at the remote Bates Motel. Norman Bates, its shy owner, talks with her about his strict mother. Planning to return home, Marion is murdered in the shower by a mysterious figure. Norman hides her body and sinks her car in a swamp. Marion’s sister Lila, Sam, and private investigator Arbogast search for her. Arbogast traces her to the motel but is killed in the Bates house. When the sheriff reveals Norman’s mother died years earlier, Lila and Sam investigate themselves. Lila discovers Mrs. Bates’ mummified corpse, and Norman—dressed as his mother—attacks her before Sam stops him. A psychiatrist explains Norman killed his mother, preserved her body, and developed a murderous “Mother” personality. Marion’s car is later recovered from the swamp.
