Overview

Under the care of the IMS since October 2023, the approximately 70,000 images that make up the photographic collection of Januário Garcia (1943-2021) constitute one of the most significant documents of Brazilian black memory. While the immense collection is being cleaned and cataloged, a process that takes time to carefully and carefully analyze the information, researchers at the institute are working to enrich it with testimonies and interviews from people close to the photographer – family, friends and partners in photography and in the black movement, of which he was an important leader.
