Overview
In 1979, grad students Lisa Bubon and Ann Christophersen founded Women and Children First, a bookstore that focused on feminist and lesbian literat ure. In 1990, the store relocated to Andersonville, a small neighborhood on the outskirts of Chicago inhabited mainly by Swedish immigrants. Their move helped transform Andersonville into a major hub of lesbian community, attracting thousands of lesbian residents along with women-owned businesses and lesbian bars. Through extensive interviews and never-before-seen archival materials, GIRLSTOWN explores Andersonville's influential past, its rapidly changing present, and its uncertain future.
