In the distant past, the Netherlands was often at war with other nations - overseas as well. Thus it happened that in 1634 a number of Caribbean islands were conquered from Spain. Since that time, Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The six islands are vastly different from each other, but for centuries have shared their bond with the Netherlands.
