Overview
Robert Urie's S15 class 4-6-0 locomotives for the London & South Western Railway were originally intended to haul heavy freight over the lengthy main lines out of London. However, their rugged design, ample power and fair turn of speed meant that they were as much mixed traffic engines as they were freight. Richard Maunsell's modifications during the Southern Railway era ensured that their usefulness never waned.
